The first thought that comes to your mind as you read this is HOW? Because here we are not speaking about just earning, but keeping your fixed day job and adding to it. Freelancing allows for it, the word itself means working at YOUR will and in YOUR time.

If your day job gives you a regular income and the comfort of paying those monthly bills, you want to increase that to add to your savings for emergencies and luxuries, freelancing gives you that much-needed option easily. While this work style has been around for long before the pandemic, it’s in the past months during work from home that its real importance and significance have risen.

With WFH being the norm now in most industries for the past 15 months, there is an immense saving on commute time, hanging around window shopping time and the general whiling away time we are all used to. Put together all of that and you do not only have enough to schedule your home tasks and family moments but a lot of pockets that can be utilized to freelance.

What can you freelance as and what kind of jobs can you pick up when employed in a full-time day job? This is important and should be verified upon checking with your company policy as you would not want to do anything that is remotely unlawful. Let’s say you are working as a data engineer for a certain office, and in your spare time want to work on short-term gig jobs in the same profile. Since the role is similar, a check on the rules is important. However, if you are also highly conversant with scrum techniques or excellent in teaching software languages then freelancing for a few hours each day or on a project basis for such jobs will not only help in giving you the much needed additional income but also broaden your perspectives, widen your objectives and allow you to interact with many more persons outside your field, all doing it without crossing any boundaries.

Let’s take another example. What if you are a teacher of English literature in college on a fixed job and in a day you have at most three classes, whether during live teaching or WFH, so either way each day you have at least a few hours to spare? It makes complete sense to use that time to freelance, using your knowledge of English and putting it to good use for content writing, blogging for companies, doing proofreading, and so on, the scope is endless. Again what’s the advantage? Besides augmenting your income, freelancing helps develop additional talent, gives you exposure, and best of all has the advantage of allowing you the freedom to take only as much work as you can finish comfortably. All in all, it’s a win-win situation.

Freelancing is to the future of work, as perhaps artificial intelligence is to humankind. The earlier you realize the benefits, the faster you gain and make the most from it.
